Sophie and James – Garden Design Delight
Sophie and James - Garden Design Delight
I was asked by Sophie to have a look at their garden and come up with some ideas on how to make the space look bigger and make better use of the space. When I first saw the area, I could see several issues to consider including:
- the area is a small courtyard
- there is a dominant wall opposite the doors leading out to the garden
- low flowerbeds would be an issue as they have a beautiful, energetic pet dog
- there is a hot tub they desperately want to start using
- how to include colour to the area without being overbearing
I asked Sophie what her favourite colours were and she liked turquoise and pink. This was perfect for the ideas I had. So, this is what I came up with!
Hopefully you can see I have started to show designs from different angles as it is difficult to show a 360 degree view.
The main point of this garden is to lead your eye around it. The different height boxes are to create interest with plants at different heights. The decking on the floor is at an angle to direct you out of the house and straight into the heart of the garden.
On the right hand side of the garden behind the doors is a brick wall. I know that some people do not want to paint walls as once you start you have to keep doing it. I have suggested using a piece of turquoise aqua board or acrylic as this will be very sleek and contemporary (no maintenance either). This will also be a great backdrop for the area where the BBQ could go and would be easy to clean down.
I did not want the colour to be too dominant and so have suggested the weathered scaffold board look for the area around the hot tub and with some twinkly lights this could be a really romantic area.
The look on Sophie’s face today was one of absolute delight when she saw the design and I cannot wait to see it come to life in her garden.
