Planting Schemes
Transform Your Garden with Expert Planting Schemes
What are Planting Schemes?
At Pauline’s Plants, we understand that a well-executed planting scheme can be the secret ingredient that elevates your garden from ordinary to extraordinary. We are here to help you create a harmonious and captivating outdoor space through thoughtful and strategic plant selection.
But what exactly are planting schemes, and why are they a great benefit for your garden? Planting schemes go beyond randomly placing plants in your garden. They involve careful planning and consideration of various factors such as soil conditions, sunlight exposure, and desired aesthetics. A well-designed planting scheme aims to create a balanced and cohesive environment, where each plant complements and enhances the others, resulting in a stunning and harmonious landscape.
One of the primary benefits of planting schemes is the ability to create a specific theme or style in your garden. Whether you envision a lush, tropical paradise, a serene and minimalist Zen garden, or a vibrant and colorful floral display, a well-crafted planting scheme can bring your vision to life. By strategically selecting plants with the right colors, textures, and growth habits, we can create the atmosphere and ambience that perfectly reflects your personal taste and preferences.
Another advantage of planting schemes is the opportunity to create a diverse and sustainable garden ecosystem.
By incorporating a variety of plant species, including native plants, we can attract beneficial insects, birds, and other wildlife to your garden. This not only adds vibrancy and life to your space but also contributes to the overall health and balance of the ecosystem.
Planting schemes also offer practical benefits. Carefully chosen plants can provide shade, privacy, and windbreaks, making your outdoor space more enjoyable and comfortable. Additionally, by selecting plants with different bloom times and seasonal interests, we can ensure that your garden is a visual delight all year round, with a continuous display of colours and textures that change with the seasons.
Discover the transformative power of planting schemes and unlock the full potential of your garden.

Charles and Jane’s Garden
Charles and Jane have had their garden decked and two planting areas were ready for plants but they did not know what plants to put in. They wanted plants with impact but low maintenance.
Pauline in Newton Abbott
This lady had an area outside the front of her house which was covered in shrubs of different descriptions and was not accessible at all. She wanted some ideas of what she could do with it. Her one requirement was that she wanted a small bridge incorporated into it, which her husband made. It was very difficult to put this design onto paper as she was keeping some of the plants in the garden.
I mapped out the garden using sand to show where we could put a brick edge in to surround the planting beds. I then showed her where we could place a dry river bed so her bridge could look like it was going over a river. We could then fill all the other areas with membrane and gravel to stop the weeds coming through and make it easy to walk around.
I did not realise how significant the bridge was until she put a plaque on it and said that it reminded her of a bridge she used to play on when she lived in the Phillipines. Overall, Pauline was absolutely thrilled with the garden and loves to show it off to everyone.
Bramblewood
The letting agent for this property contacted me and asked if I could put a planting scheme in for the property called Bramblewood. I contacted the owner, Steve, and we discussed what he would like. The job needed to be done quite promptly as a photoshoot had been arranged.
Within a week, I had put a design together, gathered all the plants and put the scheme together. The plants are now in and I am looking forward to seeing the photo shoot, as well as how the plants grow over the next few months.
Steve – Dry river bed garden
his customer wanted some plants in their front garden. He had some ideas of a couple of plants he liked and he had an idea of a budget. I could see that if we moved the gravel around then we could make a dry river bed that curved around to the main living room window, which would lead your eye around the garden. The customer was really thrilled with the idea and we put it together
The sleepers were cut to different heights and buried into the ground to look like breakers. Different grasses, Phormiums, Ferns and other perennial plants were strategically placed to make the river bed look as natural as possible.
